Meet Sushi Chef Yoshi Ota
Born in Hokkaido, Japan, Chef Yoshi Ota began his culinary journey at the prestigious ANA Hotel restaurant in Tokyo. With over 40 years of experience in the art of sushi making, he has honed his skills both in the United States and Japan, including a notable invitation to serve as the guest Itamae, or skilled chef, at New York’s legendary Sushi Den.
In his early 30s, Chef Ota opened his own restaurant in the heart of Ginza, Tokyo. For more than a decade, Ginza Gakyu captivated both locals and international connoisseurs, earning acclaim for its high-quality, inventive sushi served in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Since relocating to the United States, Chef Ota has played a pivotal role in the culinary scene. He was a founding member of Kushi Izakaya and Sushi in downtown DC and served as the head Sushi Chef and Sake Sommelier at Sushiko in Chevy Chase. His restaurant journey includes the successful launch of Yuzu in Bethesda, followed by Sushi Gakyu, located just a block from the White House. Now, he is thrilled to announce the upcoming opening of his latest venture, Sushi Gaku, in Georgetown.
Chef Ota is one of the few chefs in the area to hold a Fugu (Pufferfish) preparation license, showcasing his commitment to authentic Japanese cuisine. He is honored to share his culinary philosophy of cooking, eating, and drinking with the United States.
